Youth Red Cross is an international organisaiton, the motto of which is Health, Service & Friendship.

Jean Henry Durant, the founder of the Red Cross, was a man whose heart bled for the poor, the sick and the afflicted, one who was so eloquent in his pen and convincing in his conversations, was born in Geneva, Switzerland, then under a Calvinist sweep. Dunant’s father was businessman. His mother was deeply religious. She toned up Dunant’s mind in his formative years. Associated with many welfare organisaitons Durant grew up as a successful banker.

Europe was changining fast in the post 1850’s when Germany and Italy were rapidly heading towards “Unification”. A fierce battle was waged (in June 24, 1859) at Salferino, in northern Italy. Henry Durant was  “a mere tourist with no part whatsoever in this great conflict” and it was his “rare privilege to witness the moving scene. The bloodshed, the sight of the heart of the young Durant who “soothed, comforted and consoled” the wounded solders. The inadequacy of medical personnel succour to the wounded soldiers. Promotly came enthusiastic response from the women around to help the maimed and wounded and their cry “Tutti fratelli” (“All are brothers” ) caught like fire.

Durant returned to Switzerland, as  a changed man, wrote down his “harrowing experiences” in A MEMORY OF SUFFERING that stirred the conscience of Europe and the whole world.

Many nations of Europe were promoted to form the International committee to Relief of the wounded. They resolved to adopt a distinctive sign. a Red Cross on white ground – to identify and protect those who assisted the wounded solders. Thus was born a new organization. International Committee of Red Cross. Subsequently, the ICRC widened its horizon & rendered yeomans’s service not only during the wars but also during all disasters.

From 1867, the life of Durant became catastrophic. He almost became bankrupt and left Geneva, never to return. Disappointment aged him prematurely and from 1892, due to ill health, he stayed in local hospital at Heiden, for the last 18 years of his life. When he was discovered by a young journalist in 1895, the world was shocked to hear the plight that he was in and came forward to help him, but Durant politely declined to receive any help.

In  1901, the first Nobel Peace Prize was conferred on him, shared jointly with a Frenchman. The ICRC said, from Geneva :

“There is no man who more deserves this honour, for it was you, forty years ago, who set on foot the International Organisation for the relief of the wounded on the battle field. Without you, the Red Cross, the Supreme Humanitarian Achievement of the Nineteenth century, would probably never have been undertaken”.

The apostle of peace, Jean Henry Durant breathed his last on Sunday, October 30, 1910, at Heiden, amidst the serentity of the mountains.
